Photovoltaics: China changes tax rules on modules and batteries. What to expect in 2026
Find out about the latest Chinese tax changes on modules and batteries and their impact on European photovoltaics.
The global photovoltaic market is preparing for another significant shift on the cost front.
Starting from April 1, 2026 , China, the world's leading solar manufacturing hub, will change its tax rebate system on exports of photovoltaic modules and batteries .
A decision that could have an impact on prices and purchasing strategies throughout the European supply chain.
Let's see what changes and what the possible implications are for the market.
Tax refunds on photovoltaic modules suspended
China's Ministry of Finance has announced the abolition of the 9% tax refund on the export of photovoltaic modules , currently in force.
The measure will be effective from April 1, 2026 .
According to initial indications from major Asian producers, this decision could translate into:
a Module prices to increase starting in the second quarter of 2026 ,
in combination with the increase in raw material costs registered as early as the end of 2025.
Batteries: Refunds reduced today, abolished tomorrow
As for storage systems, the picture is slightly different but equally significant.
From the April 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027 , the tax refund on batteries:
will drop from 9% to 6% for technologies lithium And vanadium redox .
Subsequently, from 2027 , this incentive will also be completely eliminated .
This means that the storage sector could face a phase of price realignment , with more gradual impacts than the modules, but still to be carefully monitored especially in medium-long term projects.
Impacts on the European and Italian markets
For installers, EPCs and B2B operators, these tax changes could lead to:
greater price volatility during 2026;
need for a more careful planning of supplies ;
growing attention to order timing .
In a scenario like this it becomes increasingly important to be able to count on:
reliable suppliers
updated and transparent quotes
efficient order management
